Lacoda Needs a Forever Home

UPDATE:  Yay!  Great news!
Lacoda has been placed with a  nice family in Lewiston, ME.  Thank you all for your assistance and interest in trying to place Lacoda in a loving home.

She’s a beautiful dog and I’m glad she will be well taken care of by a family who’ll love her and play with her.

My name is Lacoda and I am a three-year-old spayed German Shepherd. I live with my master, two cats and another dog — a little one who loves me — and we all get along really well. The only problem is that my master is about to join the Army, so he has to go away. He is not very happy about leaving me, so he is trying really hard to make sure I find a happy home with people who will love me as much as he does.

So far, he has found a home for everyone but me.

Maybe it is because I am a German Shepherd, and we’re kind of big? Maybe it’s because I haven’t spent much time around little kids?

I had an interview last year for a special training program for helper dogs, and they pulled my ears and my tail as part of the process, and they accepted me to go through training as a companion to children with autism. I was pretty proud of myself, and my master was really proud of me too, but he wasn’t ready to leave home yet, so he wanted me to stay with him instead of going away to doggie training school. For now, I am still guarding our house, letting my master know when someone’s at the door or snooping around our windows, because that’s my job.

I’m happy and healthy and easy-going, and hoping some really kind people will give me a peaceful home somewhere soon!

Lacoda is currently living in Maine.

If you think you might be interested in providing a forever home for her, please contact us.

Dog Days of Summer

We’ve all heard the phrase “Dog Days of Summer” and I was curious about its meaning so I started to read up about it. It was pretty interesting and I learned some things so I thought I’d share.

The phrase was originally just “Dog Days” and referred to the hottest days of summer. The phrase dates back to the ancient Rome where their Dog Days were between July 23-24th and August 23-24th.  They associated the hot days with the star Sirius, the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major.  I was saddend to learn that the Romans would sacrifice a “brown dog” at the beginning of the Dog Days to appease the rage of Sirius thinking the star was the cause of the hot weather.  What were they thinking? Glad I wasn’t living in those times!

I always thought of Dog Days as just being lazy days during the hot and humid days of summer.  The time when everyone including our dogs slow down and succumb to the heat.

In recent years, the phrase takes on a new meaning.  This is one I hadn’t known about at all and it references the American Stock exchange of all things.  Apparently, summer is typically a slow time for our stock market and poorly performing stocks with little potential are referred to as “dogs.”

Lastly, the Old Farmer’s Almanac lists the timing of the Dog Days as the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11, coinciding with the ancient (at sunrise) rising of the Dog Star, Sirius. These are the days of the year when rainfall is at its lowest levels.
